The Chargers opened the second day of the draft in the fourth round by adding Iowa tight end Scott Chandler to their receiving corps to complement Pro Bowler Antonio Gates.
Chandler, a 6-foot-7, 257-pounder, was the Hawkeyes’ go-to guy on third downs as Iowa’s offensive was plagued by injuries in 2006. He caught 10 third down passes for first downs and 27 of his 46 catches were good for first downs. He gained 591 yards for 12.8 yards per reception.
“He’s a big, physical tight end who had a very productive college career,” Chargers head coach Norv Turner said. “He gives us and on-the-line, blocking tight end who can also contribute in the passing game. He’s more of a guy that is going to play on the line. He’s a good run blocker but has been effective in the passing game.”
Chandler began his career as a wide receiver in 2003 before switching to tight end in 2004. Despite playing a backup role, he finished fourth on the team in catches with 24 receptions for 324 yards (13.8 avg) and two touchdowns.
As a junior in 2005, Chandler led the team with 47 catches for 552 yards (11.7) and two touchdowns. He left the Iowa City campus with 117 catches for 1,467 and 10 touchdowns in four years.
“He’s a huge man,” Chargers assistant general manbaer Buddy Nix. “We like his size and versatility. He's got a good body of work. He’s a young guy who just turned 21 and has played for four years."
With only Gates, Manumaleuna and Kelly Griffeth on the roster, the Chargers entered Day 2 looking for another body at the tight end position and Chandler fills that need.
Nix believes that Chandler has a big upside and feels like he's motivated to reach it.
"He’s got to get stronger, which we can do," Nix said. "He’s a little lax as far as lower body strength, but he’s definitely a good guy to work with and bring on. He’s got great character and we know he’s going to come in and work hard to get better."
