As expected, Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith will have one more draft pick to utilize in the NFL Draft in April.

The Chargers learned Monday that they’ve been awarded a fifth-round choice as compensation for the loss of linebacker Donnie Edwards in free agency last spring. The Chargers’ compensatory pick will be the 166th overall selection, the 33rd in the fifth round. It’s the only compensatory pick awarded in the fifth round.

With the additional pick, the Chargers now have selections in the first round (27th overall), two in the fifth and one each in the sixth and seventh.

The Chargers have already benefited from several choices in this year’s draft. San Diego traded its second-round pick to Miami last October for Pro Bowl wide receiver Chris Chambers. During the 2007 Draft, the Chargers traded their third-round pick in the 2008 Draft to Chicago Bears as part of a package to move up and select safety Eric Weddle. And last July, the Bolts used their fourth-round pick in the 2008 draft to select defensive back Paul Oliver in the Supplemental Draft.

The NFL awarded a total of 32 compensatory draft picks to 15 teams. The Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals received four extra selections, while four teams – Chicago, Indianapolis, Philadelphia and Washington – were awarded three compensatory picks.
