Volek saddened by loss of McNair

Posted Jul 4, 2009

The entire sports world was rocked by the tragic news of Steve McNair’s death Saturday. For Chargers quarterback Billy Volek, who served as McNair’s understudy for six seasons in Tennessee, the news was particularly painful.

“My condolences go out to the McNair family,” said Volek, who was celebrating the holiday with his family in Sacramento Saturday.  “I was fortunate enough to get to know Steve on a personal level.  From day one he took me underneath his wing and mentored me.  He was a man of outstanding character and will be missed by many.”

McNair, who played 13 NFL seasons with the Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens, was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head Saturday afternoon in a downtown Nashville condominium.

Volek and McNair were teammates from 2000-05.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.
