Rivers thrilled with long-term deal

Posted Aug 24, 2009

Philip Rivers had plenty to be happy about Monday. He received long-term security from the Chargers and will get to continue his career in a city he loves. He also gets to start the season without the contract hanging over his head.

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers didn’t have much to say this summer when asked about his contract situation, largely because he refused to let it become a topic of conversation.

After Rivers signed an extension through the 2015 season Monday afternoon, he won’t have to worry about fielding any more questions on the subject at all.

“The one thing I’ve said throughout the summer was that my contract was never going to become a distraction for this team,” Rivers said.  “I was focused on the season. I’m obviously grateful that it got done and that I’m going to be a Charger for years to come.”

Rivers has led the Chargers to AFC West titles in each of his three seasons as a starter. He also holds the Chargers’ record with a 92.9 career passer rating, and last season he set a franchise record with 34 touchdown passes.

Most importantly, his career record as a starter, including playoffs, is 36-18 (.667), including 22-5 (.815) at home.

“This is a great day for the Chargers and Chargers fans,” said team President Dean Spanos.  “Philip has proven he has all of the necessary qualities to be a successful quarterback in the NFL.  He’s a proven winner and an unquestioned leader for this football team.”

While Spanos was thrilled to lock Rivers up, the quarterback was equally grateful that Spanos is giving him the opportunity to continue his career in San Diego.   When he met with the media following Monday's practice, Rivers used the words "humbled" and "grateful" nearly a dozen times.

“I’m very appreciative to the Spanos family for keeping me around and allowing this to get done,” Rivers said. “You never are guaranteed that you will be here, but I hoped I would be for a long time.”

Rivers grew up in Alabama and played his college ball at North Carolina State, but he’s fully embraced Southern California, particularly because of the way he’s been treated by Chargers fans.  He’s not only thrilled about his football future but also about getting to continue to raise his young family in such a quality community.

“I’ll never get the South out of me,” said the Alabama native, “but San Diego is definitely home.  Three of our four children have been born out here. I love the people, love the town and love being part of the city.”
