Chargers respond to Chula Vista Developments

Posted Jun 24, 2009

Chargers Special Counsel Mark Fabiani commented today on Chula Vista City Councilmember John McCann’s statement this morning that the majority of the Chula Vista City Council does not have the “political courage” to accomplish a stadium deal.

"During the years we have worked in Chula Vista, the Chargers have enjoyed strong community support.  Councilman John McCann has been a strong leader throughout this entire effort.  We have also worked closely with Councilman Steve Castaneda, other members of the Council, and the city’s professional staff.  We understand the enormous difficulty the City faces in persuading California authorities to order the shutdown of the bay front power plant.  And until that shut down is ordered, the bay front site will not be available to the people of Chula Vista for any use whatsoever.  For that reason alone, our efforts in Chula Vista are on hold.  If in the future the City succeeds in shutting down the power plant, and the City is then interested in re-starting discussions with the team, we would be open to doing so."
