When Chargers Director of Player Personnel Jimmy Raye thinks ![]()
“He’s a big, physical, nasty guy,” Raye said Sunday morning. “He loves to get after people. The guy is a good, dominant run blocker.”
The Chargers took Vasquez (6-5, 333) with their third-round pick Sunday, the 78th overall selection in the draft. Vasquez was a three-year starter at Texas Tech, primarily at left guard. His physical prowess earned him second-team All Big 12 honors in 2008.
“It’s a dream come true and I’ll do my best to fit in,” Vasquez said. “I’m looking forward to getting to San Diego and going right back to work.”
While Vasquez spent much of his college career in a two-point stance, he was given opportunities throughout the spring to show that he can excel as an in-line blocker.
“Teams were worried that I wasn’t going to be able to come out of a three-point stance,” Vasquez said. “I think I proved it in the East-West Shrine Game in Houston. Being physical is the nature of the game, especially at the position I play.”
The Chargers were impressed with what they saw from Vasquez in both the passing game and running attack. The Bolts like the player and the person they’re getting with their third-round pick.
“Texas Tech likes to throw the ball around and he’s got pass-blocking ability,” Raye said. “At the same time, he really likes to get after people in the running game. He’s a mean guy on the field. He’s a good kid. No trouble off the field."
