Chargers, Clear Channel sign two-year extension

Posted Jun 18, 2009

The San Diego Chargers announced today a two-year contract extension with Clear Channel Communications to broadcast all of the team’s preseason, regular season and postseason games through 2011.

The current contract was due to expire following the 2009 season.  No financial terms of the contract were disclosed.

Rock 105.3 FM will continue to serve as the radio home of the Chargers and will continue to produce extended pre-game and postgame shows.  Clear Channel XTRA Sports 1360 AM also will broadcast the games and the postgame shows.

As part of the extension, the Chargers are taking on an increasing amount of sellable inventory.

“We have enjoyed a very positive working relationship with Rock 105.3, XTRA Sports 1360 and the Clear Channel group,” said Chargers Chief Operating Officer Jim Steeg.  “This relationship with Clear Channel has provided the Chargers with greater exposure for our games and our team throughout Southern California as well as to a wide variety of audiences and demographics.

“Signing this extension now is a win-win for the Chargers and Clear Channel as well as our fans.  It allows both organizations to continue selling multi-year sponsorships and packages, and it provides important continuity for our fans.”

Clear Channel President and Market Manager Debbie Wagner added: “We are extremely pleased to continue to be in business with the San Diego Chargers for this upcoming season and the following two years.  The Chargers, like Clear Channel, pride themselves on being the very best.  We truly value our partnership.”

The Chargers originally partnered with Clear Channel Communications and Rock 105.3 FM in 2005 to carry all preseason, regular season and postseason games.  XTRA Sports 1360 AM began carrying the games in 2008.  Since day one of the partnership, it has included an enhanced programming and promotional relationship with all seven Clear Channel stations in San Diego, including Rock 105.3 FM, 101.5 KGB FM, Star 94.1 FM, New Country 95.7 FM, Channel 93.3 FM, XTRA Sports 1360 AM and KOGO 600 AM.
