“Most people know the Southeastern Conference is a running conference, a physical conference,” said Jimmy Raye, the team’s Director of Player Personnel. “He’s played against a lot of guys that are now in the NFL like (LSU’s) Glenn Dorsey. We think that will translate well to his play in the NFL.”
Johnson (5-10, 219) pounder was a first-team All-Mountain West Conference pick who rushed for 1,200 yards and caught 32 balls for 295 yards his senior season. As a part-time starter his junior year, he rushed for 957 yards.
“Gartrell is a physical, productive running back,” Spanos said. “He gives us an inside running presence.”
Although the Chargers see him as a power back, he has been shown himself to be explosive in high school and college. When he played at Miami Springs High, he led Florida’s talented Dade County in rushing.
At CSU, Johnson improved his stock in the NFL Draft when he gained 285 yards and scored two touchdowns in the Rams’ win over Fresno State in the New Mexico Bowl.
