Buster Davis, Gary Banks work with first-team offense during first OTA session

SAN DIEGO – Philip Rivers lined up under center Tuesday with Darren Sproles and Antonio Gates accompanying him in the backfield.

Nothing unusual there.

The trio helped produce one of the NFL’s most explosive passing offenses last season with 271.1 yards per game and 29 touchdowns.

Further from the ball, the receivers in the formation wore unfamiliar numbers.

With Legedu Naanee expected to join the team after he passes his physical, Buster Davis and Gary Banks got the majority of the repetitions with the first-team offense.

Davis, a fourth-year player out of LSU, and Banks, a practice squad member the past two seasons, had a chance to work on their timing with Rivers and offer some advice to a flock of rookie receivers.

“Obviously we know what Vincent (Jackson) and Malcom (Floyd) bring to this team and they’re gonna be in there, but certainly it gives (others) a chance to show what they can do and it seems like they’re excited and gonna grab a hold of that opportunity,” Rivers said.

Davis, who caught six passes for 52 yards in a Week 17 win against the Redskins last season, said he’s focused on timing his routes and getting in sync with the quarterbacks rather than who’s next to him during practice.

He’s told the rookies to pay attention to details in meetings, contribute during special teams and take care of their bodies.

Six of the 10 receivers currently on the roster are undrafted rookies. Head Coach Norv Turner said they’re talented enough to compete for a spot.

“I’m excited about them and we’ll see which one of them steps up,” Turner said. “People (might) say, ‘Where’d that guy come from?’ I think we’ve got some guys that can be good players.”
