With Philip Rivers, Bolts Always Have a Chance

Posted Nov 25, 2013

With Philip Rivers under center, the San Diego Chargers know they always have a chance to pull out a win.

We mentioned yesterday how Head Coach Mike McCoy felt certain that with 1:24 remaining in the game and his team down by four that the Bolts would find a way to pull out the win.

A major reason?  Philip Rivers.

"I'll tell you right now, we've got a great quarterback," he said. “There was no doubt in my mind at the end of the game he was going down and scoring. We’ve got a great quarterback here and he deserves all the credit he gets.  We’re very fortunate he’s our franchise quarterback."

In the win, Rivers accomplished something only Dan Marino and Joe Montana have done before.  His 392 yards marked the fourth time he’s surpassed 390 yards in a game this year, the most in NFL history.  Overall, he completed 27 of 39 attempts for 392 yards and three touchdowns for a 127.3 passer rating.  Through 11 games, Rivers is having one of his best seasons, which is saying a lot for a player who has long played at a high level.  He has completed 281 of 397 passes for 3,381 yards, 22 touchdowns and a 106.6 passer rating.

The throws Rivers made on Sunday showed off his complete arsenal.  He moved confidently in the pocket, hit runners on crossing routes and threw balls where only his guy could make a play on it, best evidenced by  Ajirotutu’s game winning touchdown reception. .

“Philip Rivers was once again outstanding,” said McCoy. “Lights out.  The game’s on the line, he goes right down the field (and) makes the big play to Tutu coming in at the end.  Big catch.  And there were a lot of big plays for the whole entire football team.  It wasn’t just one guy. There was a number of guys.”

It’s true that there were plenty of heroes on the offensive side of the ball, including an offensive line that allowed just one sack against a defense that brought down more quarterbacks per game than anyone else in the league.  Still, after the game, all of them to some degree credited their success to  the man under center.  Needing a touchdown to win the game in a hostile environment, they knew with the ball in Rivers hands, they had a good chance of coming out victorious.

“Like I keep saying, we’ve got big playmakers on our team,” said Green.  “We’ve got a great quarterback that knows how to move in the pocket and make big throws.”

Perhaps no one on the Chargers roster knows Rivers better than Nick Hardwick.  Making their NFL debut in the same year, Hardwick  has been under center for the vast majority of his snaps.

“He’s incredible,” said Hardwick.  “We went through a bunch of ups and downs and to get a win like this, down to the wire, this really was an all-timer.  And (Rivers) was a big reason for that. With him back there we know we always have a chance.”
