Weddle enjoying Hawaii, Pro Bowl

Posted Jan 27, 2012

HONOLULU – First times are supposed to be memorable.

Chargers safety Eric Weddle is making sure of that.

Attending his first Pro Bowl, Weddle is enjoying Hawaii with his wife and two kids, his parents, his in-laws and friends, including Steve Gregory, Scott Mruczkowski and their wives.

“It’s been great,” Weddle said, his skin showing signs of excessive sun. “I’ve been hanging with the guys and just enjoying Hawaii and the festivities. Hopefully we get a win on Sunday.”

The only defensive player to represent San Diego at the Pro Bowl, Weddle works against teammates Philip Rivers, Antonio Gates, Vincent Jackson and Ryan Mathews every day during the AFC’s practices.

Weddle took his daughter, Brooklyn Marie, and his son, Gaige, to the Polynesian Cultural Center on Thursday evening. They also visited a gold plantation and spent plenty of time at the beach and in the pool this week.

“It’s big,” Weddle said of his selection, interrupted momentarily by a playful Darelle Revis. “You always want to gain the respect of your peers. Being named here, it’s a big honor and I hope I can make more.”

The free safety, also a first-team All-Pro, said he’s happy about the promotion of John Pagano to defensive coordinator.

“I think we’re going to be great. We’ve got to get better, all of us, and hopefully we can. We’ve got to play smart. I can’t wait to get to work and we’ll see how it goes,” Weddle said.

He’ll be practicing with new secondary coach Ron Meeks before too long, a former NFL defensive coordinator in his own right who is known as a strong positional teacher.

“I can’t wait to meet him,” Weddle said.
