Voice of the Chargers, Josh Lewin, on Bolts’ Offseason

Posted Apr 14, 2014

Chargers Play-by-Play announcer Josh Lewin chimes in on the Bolts offseason.

Fans of the San Diego Chargers and New York Mets have one very lucky thing in common – they get to boast the talented Josh Lewin as their radio play-by-play voice.  With the Mets in Southern California over the weekend, we caught up with the voice of the Chargers to get his thoughts on the Bolts offseason.

Chargers.com: So the new league year started a month ago.  General Manager Tom Telesco made it a priority to lock up key returning members who were free agents, such as Donald Butler, Darrell Stuckey, Chad Rinehart and so on.  As someone who watched these players extensively last year, what did you think of that decision to keep the continuity in place?

Lewin: I love the idea.  So often in this sport, and society now too, people are leaving.  Just as you are getting used to something, that thing goes away.  So continuity when you can get it is clutch.  Look at Kansas City.  They got so close to the mountain top but they have to totally redo their offensive line now.  The Chargers I think deserve a lot of credit for sticking with their program.  They got the right people, they identified who they are both on the field and off, and they are going to keep running with it.  I really liked those moves.

As far as new players, the biggest name both the fans and media seem to be talking about is Donald Brown.  What do you think he brings to the table?

Lewin: I was surprised at first by that move, but then really pleased, if not thrilled.  We’re not thinking initially that he was a big need, but the thought of three different and dynamic players back there giving you all kind of options really grows the offense.  It’s a really fun thought.

Chargers.com: What are your thoughts on a guy like Dwight Freeney returning after missing almost his entire first season in San Diego?

Lewin: I think he is kind of like a bonus free agent that the team didn’t have to go out and find.  I think people forget what an important piece Freeney was going to be for what the Chargers were about last season.  If he’s ready to rock and roll again, that’s a great example of a guy who can really play an important role.

Chargers.com: The schedule should be released shortly. We know who we are going to be playing, but how do you think it is going to shake out?

Lewin: I hate waiting!  I really do.  This is the worst.   I love getting that schedule, not only so I can figure out my whacky schedule, but so I can break it down.  How does this particular match look at this point in the season?  How will the Chargers and the opponent do coming into this game coming off who they just played and ahead of who they have next week?  I really enjoy that.

Chargers.com: Of course the NFL Draft starts on May 8 with the Bolts picking 25th overall.  Whether it is in the first round or the seventh, is there a particular area you’d like to see the team address?

Lewin: I hate to default to the cliché about best available player, but I believe in that.  You can always use a nose tackle, you can always use another linebacker, you can always use another wide receiver and so on.  I also think the team has a need long term to figure out what is going on at corner.  But not knowing Telesco’s plan, I just hope they get the best guy available.

Chargers.com: We do a poll on the website after wins about your best calls.  We also do an annual tournament to pick the best play, and your play-by-play call plays a large part in it.  In both cases your call on Keenan Allen’s “mile-high touchdown” against the Denver Broncos really resonated with fans.  What are your thoughts on that particular call and any other you may have liked from the 2013 season?

Lewin: First off, thanks for doing that promotion because I thought that was really cool.  But actually, that’s a call I would love to have back because as cool as that was, I don’t think I really captured the essence of that play.  I couldn’t tell from our vantage point in that booth whether he’d actually been given the touchdown or not, or whether he actually jumped over somebody or around somebody.  Only when I saw the replay did I understand what a great play that really was.  Now, that one was certainly up there, but there were a lot of great moments from the entire year that I’ll remember so I can’t fathom how fans were able to whittle it down.

Chargers.com: Finally, I know baseball season just started for you, but do you have your Chargers itch yet?  Like the rest of us can you not wait for the season to get started?

Lewin: Oh yeah!  My Chargers itch happened about a day and a half after that loss in the playoffs to Denver.  I couldn’t wait to get going again just because I’m so excited about what they’re building and how they finished last year.  I can’t wait to get back in that booth and watch it all unfold with Hank (Bauer) and all the people I’ve come to know and love these past ten years.
