A brand new rule in 2012, each team can name one player with a “major injury” on the Reserve/Injured list as eligible to be reactivated at a later time that season. A “major injury” is defined as any injury rendering a player unable to practice or play football for at least six weeks from the date of the injury.
This new rule is perfect for Brown, who broke his ankle on August 18th and will be out at least eight weeks. Under the old rules, the Chargers needed to decide whether to keep him on the active 53-man roster all season long until he was ready to return, or place him on the Reserve/Injured list, ending his season before the year began. Now, the Bolts will designate the second-year receiver as their one player eligible to be activated off the list and have him back at some point during the back end of the season.
