Vincent Brown Hasn't Missed a Beat

Posted Jul 26, 2013

After missing all of 2012 with a broken ankle, Vincent Brown is back and he hasn't missed a beat.

Who was the top player of the 2012 San Diego Chargers training camp?

For Philip Rivers, the answer is easy – Vincent Brown.

“We know last year (he) was the MVP of training camp,” Rivers said.  “But his season got cut short right there at the beginning.”

Yes, we all know the unfortunate injury Brown suffered in the second preseason game, breaking his ankle and missing all of last season.  The good news, however, is that Brown is back and impressing everyone in sight once again.

Want to know just how good Brown looks?  Just ask Shareece Wright, who has to go up against #86 each and every day.

“Vincent flat out looks great,” said Wright. “He looks just like himself before he got hurt.  He was one of our best receivers out there before he got hurt, so it’s really good to see him back out there being his old self.”

As a rookie, the San Diego State product recorded 19 receptions for 329 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Before suffering his injury, the wideout led the team with six catches for 112 yards and two touchdowns in six quarters of action.  Now he’s happy to be back out on the field, catching balls and making plays.

“Missing all of last year, to be back out here with the guys playing the game I love feels amazing,” he said. “Just to be out here running and catching passes and being around the guys, I couldn’t ask for anything else.”

Simply watching him you’d never have guessed he hasn’t played in an NFL game in nearly 17 months.  Brown admits his injury was more severe than he initially thought, but now that he is nearly a year removed from surgery, he feels as though he hasn’t missed a beat.

“My ankle is back 100% and I’m ready to go,” he said. “I didn’t want to sit out the whole year, but physically I just couldn’t get back. The injury was a lot worse than I thought it was, so I was busy with the trainers, who did a great job, making sure it was like it was before the injury. We worked hard getting it to where it needed to be in game-shape. “

As for Rivers, Brown is busy building his rapport back up with his quarterback

“I’m hard on myself and know that I have a lot of catching up to do, but I feel good about where Philip and I are,” he said. “The main thing for me was getting on the field to run and cut. But I feel like the chemistry is still there with Philip.”

Fans at practice clearly excited to see the third-year pro back in action, cheering him loudly with his every catch. That support means the world to Brown.

“They have been awesome,” he said with a big grin. “I love the fans out here.  There are die-hard Chargers fans out here every day.  I’m able to interact with them every day, and seeing them support us the way they do, it’s just awesome.”

There are still plenty of open training camp dates remaining, including a pair this Saturday and Sunday.  Chances are if you are able to make it, you’ll see Vincent Brown making some big-time plays.
