Vasher gets first INT

Posted May 20, 2010

Free agent signee Nathan Vasher makes first interception of OTAs on Wednesday.

SAN DIEGO – The second day of OTAs nearly expired without an interception.

That’s what happens when defenders can’t intimidate with contact, receivers aren’t slowed by pads and quarterbacks keep their red jerseys as clean.

Throw in one of the best receiving running back-tight end duos in the NFL with Darren Sproles and Antonio Gates and one of the league’s most prolific passers in Philip Rivers and the offense doesn’t need a horde of experienced receivers to play a proficient game of catch.

A couple of times defensive backs broke on the football but didn’t make a catch.

Nathan Vasher ended the defensive drought during the final half of Wednesday’s two-hour session.

He waited on a slow-developing pass and scooped it against his body with both hands.

The Chargers signed the former All-Pro Chicago Bears cornerback as a free agent March 29.

CAMPING OUT WITH RIVERS: Philip Rivers will host a football camp July 10-11 at UC San Diego the quarterback said Monday. The event, open to boys and girls age seven to 14, runs from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. both days and costs $199.

He may even toss a few passes to the kids.

Proceeds will benefit the recently launched Rivers of Hope Foundation, designed to provide hope for children in foster homes and parents that want to adopt.

More information is available at www.riversofhopefoundation.com.

BOLTS: Sproles and rookie receiver Jeremy Williams continue to get the bulk of the repetitions returning punts and kickoffs. Rookie running back Shawnbrey McNeal assumed those duties late in Wednesday’s practice … The defense reached Rivers multiple times during the blitz period, which culminated with linebacker Kevin Burnett barking, “That’s a sack!” … QB Billy Volek connected with Earnest Smith early in team drills for a pretty 25-yard pass down the right seam.

PRACTICE WEATHER: 63 degrees, partly cloudy
