Turner: "You are What Your Record Is"

Posted Nov 19, 2012

Today, the Chargers aren’t worrying whether or not they will make the postseason.

Instead, they are focusing on one game at a time and putting together all the pieces to come out with a win.

“You just have to go and look at yourself as a football team,” said Norv Turner. “I know who we are and where we’re at. We have to find a way to go and play a complete game. We’ve got to find a way to play our best against Baltimore. We started 3-1 and over a period of time we’ve won one game over the last six games. So at some point, you are what your record is. We’re going to do everything that we can to fix the things that have kept us from winning and go find a way to go and beat Baltimore.”

Philip Rivers echoed the sentiments of his head coach.  He spent Monday explaining that no matter how upbeat and positive he feels about the team’s talent level, in the end, they are what their record says they are.

And to him, that’s unacceptable.

“There is no denying that we have been a .500 team for the last two seasons now,” said Rivers. “That is not acceptable to anyone. No one is out there going, ‘Hey we’re .500, we’re having a heck of a couple years.’ But we’re fighting...There is no lost confidence. There is certainly some frustration and disappointment but we’re going to go out and play as if we were that seven and three team that we expected to be. We’re going to play with that same confidence this week.”

Both Rivers and Turner explained that it takes just one victory to get out of the funk they’ve been in and steer them in the right direction. In order to get that win, they know they need to put together a complete game, something they have yet to do this season. Unfortunately, as both noted, it’s Week 12. Time is running out to keep talking about putting that type of production on the field.  Ultimately their record reflects where they stand at this point in the season and what they need to deal with.

“Sure it is (late), but that’s where we’re at,” said Turner. “That’s who we are, and that’s my point. It’s something that we haven’t been able to do. Again, you want to be able to get into specifics of why we haven’t been able to do it, then you go back through the different games and it’s a turnover here, it’s a late hit on a quarterback here. There are certain plays that have kept us from doing that.”

The end goal of every season is to make the post-season. But right now the Chargers are focused on putting together a complete game to get a much needed win.

Tuesday morning is Chargers Blood Drive XXXIV, which will be held at the Town and Country Convention Center from 10am to 6pm. Click here for more information.
