Turner: The Talent is There But Consistency is Not

Posted Oct 29, 2012

Head coach Norv Turner held his weekly Monday press conference today, and it sounded all too familiar to those who watched his press conference the Monday prior.

Or even the week before that.

For the third consecutive Monday afternoon press conference, Turner expressed his frustration with a team that has struggled to find its identity most notably on offense,  where they have failed to execute up to par.

“The hardest thing is I understand where everyone is, from a standpoint of our coaching staff, the players, everyone in our building and the fans,” he said. “I understand their frustration. When you have a group of guys who have had success moving the ball and had success making those types of plays and it is not happening, that is the hardest thing.”

The team’s inconsistent nature has also angered the head coach.  He explained it isn’t just any one individual or position that is to be blamed, but rather all of them.  Each unit has made mistakes at different moments in time, letting the team down on different occasions.  Turner believes that once they get on the same page, the offense will be fine. The issue is timing, which is of essence as we approach the midpoint of the season.

“There are specific reasons (why we’re coming up short),” he said. “Usually it is a different thing in each situation where you have an opportunity. You have an opportunity to make a big play and you only get so many in a game. One play it might be protection, one play it might be that we didn’t make the throw or we’re still trying to get on the same page. Obviously yesterday we had a few opportunities to come off with some big plays, one where Robert Meachem wasn’t able to come up with the catch. Then we had Dante Rosario in the middle and they just didn’t hook up.”

Still, despite all the Chargers struggles, Turner remains optimistic about the talent his team possesses.  He still expects big things from them.

“I do believe in this group,” he said. “That is one thing they have done and will always do. They have responded. The way these guys came out and played in the New Orleans game, the way they came out and played in the Denver game. We obviously are not able to sustain throughout an entire game. That’s what we’re talking about, the consistency of making those kinds of plays.”

Once the team gets consistent and finds its’ identity, Turner believes the Chargers can be as dangerous as any team in the league.  But with only nine games remaining in the season, it better happen sooner rather than later.
