Turner’s Friday thoughts

SAN DIEGO – By the end of the game Thursday, the Chargers’ offensive line was comprised of Brandyn Dombrowski, Tyronne Green, Nick Hardwick, Scott Mruczkowski and Jeromey Clary.

Philip Rivers got sacked a season-high six times, including the final two snaps of the game, and he was slammed to the ground countless other times.

Still, San Diego’s offense moved the ball in the third quarter by finding some openings across the middle. The Chargers’ three drives after halftime resulted in two touchdowns and a missed 46-yard field goal.

Rivers’ performance demonstrated how valuable the quarterback is, Turner said. Rivers’ numbers weren’t great, but he led those drives in the face of constant pressure behind a makeshift line.

“I love all the things about ‘adjust,’ but ultimately you’ve got to block them. That’s the adjustment that we talked about at halftime: ‘Guys, we’ve got to block them,’” Turner said, adding the Chargers tried to keep Randy McMichael, Jacob Hester and Mike Tolbert in to help with protection when possible.

“Ultimately you have to find a way to run some things that give you a chance to get guys open, and then you’ve got to block them.”

Kris Dielman (concussion) missed his third game, precluding the typical headliner matchup between he and Oakland defensive tackle Richard Seymour. Green was entrusted to that challenge in his stead.

Marcus McNeill (stinger) and Louis Vasquez (ankle) also left the game against the Raiders.

Kamerion Wimbley took advantage, making four sacks in the game after having just two in the first seven games of the season.

INJURY UPDATE: The NFL will not require the Chargers to put out an injury report until Wednesday, and San Diego usually is remiss to give free information to their upcoming opponent.

Turner didn’t provide a complete, detailed summary Friday, but did say none of the players hurt against Oakland appear headed to the IR “at this point, though he said several will be at risk to miss the Nov. 20 game at Chicago.

Luis Castillo (tibia), could return to practice in two or three weeks. Castillo injured his leg against Minnesota in the season-opener.

Turner also expressed optimism Takeo Spikes (concussion) will be ready to play again with 10 days between games, but was less bullish on Malcom Floyd (hip).

LEARNING: Turner said Vincent Brown ran incorrect routes a few times Thursday but has been “outstanding” the last two weeks when he knows where he’s supposed to be and is in position to make a play.

“It’s just a shame he missed camp. I know it’s nine weeks in, but those things you learn really stay with you,” Turner said.

Brown is a rookie learning a complex offensive system. He’s primarily been asked to play the ‘X’ receiver spot in San Diego’s offense but is learning ‘Y’ and ‘Z’ as well. He caught five passes for 97 yards against Oakland and had another 33-yard touchdown reception overturned.

Brown is one of three rookie draft picks that have started games this season for San Diego. Turner was asked about another, Corey Liuget, as well.

So far Liuget has made some plays and struggled in other areas, Turner said, but the Chargers expect continued improvement from the defensive end.

WEEKEND THOUGHT: Asked about the current four-game losing streak, Turner was honest in his assessment.

“We’ve got the best leadership we’ve had since I’ve been here,” he said. “We need to play better. Every guy needs to take care of their own job and responsibility.”
