We here at Chargers.com get plenty of predictions about your favorite team. We thought we’d weigh in on a handful of ones that have come in recently in the first edition of our new “True or False” series.
The Chargers will have at least two Pro Bowlers on defense. – Josh Berger
Ricky Henne: True – I’m quite confident the Chargers will send at least two defenders to Hawaii this year. The first name that comes to mind is
Jordan Beane: True - It’s been five years since the Chargers had two defensive Pro Bowlers, when Shawne Merriman and Jamal Williams were selected in 2008, but I think there’s a possibility of it happening this year. If Eric Weddle, who I believe should have been considered last year, Donald Butler, who was brilliant but only for 12 games due to injury in 2012, and Corey Liuget all have big years then any of those three could be saying “Aloha” to the 2014 Pro Bowl.
Ricky Henne: False – If I didn’t know better I’d say that every bad break that was humanly possible seemed to befall Mathews last season. Now fully healthy and with a greatly improved offensive line and new play-caller, I think Mathews is poised to deliver on his promise and have a strong season. Meanwhile, the Chargers have a good “problem” so to speak in that there are a ton of weapons at wide receiver and tight end. As a result, Alexander is going to have to compete for passes as
Jordan Beane: False - With the depth at wide receiver and the improvement of the Chargers offensive line I have to believe #24 is going to score more touchdowns then #84. The other wide outs will take away some possible Alexander TD’s while the offensive line additions will help Mathews end up in the end zone at a high frequency this year.
Last season’s tackle leader Eric Weddle will lead the team in tackles again. – Shiya Cohen
Ricky Henne: True - This is a tough one. I wanted to say false and go with Donald Butler who is an absolute beast in the middle, but I expect
Jordan Beane: False - Weddle would be a safe selection to lead the team in tackling in 2013. He’s been in the top three in tackles on the Chargers every year he’s played except for his 2007 rookie campaign. However I think that Donald Butler will be too much of a force at middle linebacker not to lead the team in tackles. He had more than Weddle in 2011 (78 to 67) and I think he’ll have more again in 2013.
At least three rookies will start. – Santiago K.
Ricky Henne: False – It’s safe to say the hope is for
Jordan Beane: False - “Starting” is always a relative thing in football. Injuries, packages, play calling – all have an effect on which 11 men are out on the field for the first play. That said, I’ve already penciled in two rookies to start. At right tackle D.J. Fluker should be immediately inserted into the starting offensive line while defensively middle linebacker Manti Te’o should be paired up with Donald Butler. Does a third rookie end up starting? It’s a win-win either way. Tom Telesco and Mike McCoy want competition on this team and if a rookie has an outer worldly training camp and pre-season then anything’s possible but if a rookie doesn’t start it shows just how much depth is being put together on this roster.
