Total Recap: A Busy First Day of Training Camp

Posted Jul 24, 2014

All the articles, videos, photos and behind-the-scenes access from the first day of camp.

Every offseason feels like an eternity, but at long last the San Diego Chargers kicked off 2014 Training Camp on Thursday. Here are all the articles, videos, photos and behind-the-scenes access from the first day of camp.

Head Coach Mike McCoy was pleased with the team’s performance overall, though he noted the Bolts still have a long way to go before the season starts.  Early during his post-practice remarks, he was asked what impressed him the most from the first session, and he was quick to praise the secondary.

A key member of that secondary is Brandon Flowers, who practiced with the Chargers for the very first time.

Another new cornerback participating fully for the first time was first round pick Jason Verrett.  The former TCU star was rehabbing a shoulder injury during the offseason, but achieved his goal of returning to the field for the first day of camp.

Similarly, Dwight Freeney also returned after missing most of 2013 with a torn quad.  The future Hall of Famer looked fresh and was disruptive.

Meanwhile, a rookie managed to turn heads as wellTevin Reese displayed his rare speed and drew constant cheers from the fans.

As expected, Philip Rivers chimed in to explain how this year there is a lot more familiarity compared to the first day of 2013.

Finally, there was a bit of sad news Thursday when it was learned Antonio Gates' younger sister passed away last night at the age of 22 due to an illness.  The tight end was away from Chargers Park all offseason in order to spend time with her.
