Tomlinson Scouts Bolts and Likes What He Sees

Posted Jul 28, 2014

LaDainian Tomlinson is impressed by the Chargers running backs.

Chargers royalty was in attendance Monday morning when LaDainian Tomlinson caught practice as part of NFL Network’s coverage.

The legendary rusher knows what it takes to be successful in this league, so his words carry a lot of weight.  That’s why it’s significant when LT raves about Bolts’ running back potential.

“I think this is an excellent group and with Ryan Mathews, Danny Woodhead and Donald Brown, those three are probably the most versatile group in the NFL,” Tomlinson said.  “You have a guy in Ryan Mathews that is a tempo setter.  He sets the identity for the team.  Then you have Danny Woodhead who comes out of the backfield and is a matchup nightmare for defenses.  And now you throw Donald Brown into the mix and he can do it all.  He is a little bit of everything.  So those three are three of the best at what they do.”

Brown was deeply appreciative of LT’s praise when told what the future Hall of Famer said.

“That is obviously quite an honor to hear that,” he said. “He is one of the greatest backs of all time and the best backs of our generation.  I grew up watching him, so to hear a compliment like that, it goes a long way.  The group we have is very diverse, and that’s what makes us special and dynamic.  The more weapons we can bring to the offense the better we’ll be as a team.”

Woodhead had the same reaction as Brown.

“It means a lot because he knows football and was an unbelievable player,” he said.  “We think we have some pretty good players.  We really do, but right now we’re focusing on day in and day out.  But it’s definitely great to hear someone like that say good things about you.”

Another reason LT is bullish on the Bolts rushers is because of Ollie Wilson, the team’s running back coach who also served as his mentor.

“Ollie finds a way to challenge his guys, and he is going to get the best out of all of them,” Tomlinson said.  “The thing I like about Ollie is he’s going to shoot you straight.  He’s going to tell you exactly what he expects out of you and he’s going to hold you accountable.  That’s all you can ask of from your position coach. He did a great job with me, and he’s doing a great job with those guys.”

While Tomlinson enjoys his role as an analyst on NFL Network, he did mention being a bit jealous seeing Woodhead snaring balls out of the backfield.  LT laughed explaining how he misses atching those same passes from Philip Rivers.

“Oh I absolutely love seeing that,” he said.  “I’m sure Danny during meetings is nudging Philip and telling him he’s going to be open on this play.  That’s what I used to do!  You’ve got to pitch your quarterback a little bit and cater to the things he’s going to see out here. Those two have built a great relationship.  Just look at Danny’s production last year, and that’s going to continue.  That’s why they extended him.”

Don't forget, Saturday marks the team's annual FanFest at Quacomm Stadium.  It's always a highlight of the summer and is an event you won't want to miss.  Click here for more information.
