The Chargers hope to benefit physically from three days off beginning Friday.

SAN DIEGO – The Chargers’ bye “week” is in actuality distilled into a three-day weekend that begins on Friday.

The players will take the rare opportunity to rejuvenate their bodies but will not totally relax their minds, Mike Tolbert said.

“At this point we only have seven games left in the season to try to make a season out of it, so you can’t really take a break from the mental part, but knowing that you’ve got a couple extra days to get your body rested and relaxed is a good feeling,” Tolbert said.

The Chargers anticipate getting some players back in the fold once they start full preparation for Denver.

“That doesn’t guarantee you’re going to go win. The key thing is to continue to have that focus,” Philip Rivers said.

Even for players that haven’t missed time, the rest will be beneficial.

“Some of the guys who have played an awful lot of snaps, they need to get rested and we need to get them back to where we’re 100 percent so they can play at the highest level possible,” Head Coach Norv Turner said.

“I like what we got done over the three days. I thought, as crazy as it might sound, our guys were fresher today. We’ve had good energy. I know part of it was they’re going to get a couple days off, but part of it is they do get rested. The season is a grind. I believe we can make drastic improvements when we come back and we can play our best football over the next seven weeks.”

EXTENDED SEASON: For rookies like Ryan Mathews, Seyi Ajirotutu, Cam Thomas and Brandon Lang, the season was steamrolling toward a conclusion around this time last year.

College teams are trying to collect a final win or two to improve their bowl status and vie for conference championship spots, but the regular season will end in a few weeks. Not so in the NFL, where most teams are just past the halfway mark.

That makes efficient use of the bye even more important.

“As you look around, the college season is about coming to an end,” Rivers said. “Now is the big push to push forward and understand, ‘Hey, we’re going to need you to maybe carry 20 times mid-December.’ This thing’s a long year.”

PRACTICE WEATHER: Sunny, 74 degrees.
