The Man Behind the Mask: Louis Vasquez

Posted Jul 29, 2009

Guard Louis Vasquez, the Chargers’ third-round draft pick, has impressed his coaches on the field with his strength and athleticism. Chargers.com gives fans a chance to meet the man behind the mask.

If you weren’t a pro football player, what would you like to be doing?

“I’d probably be a boxer.  I grew up around boxing.  My uncles were into weight lifting, so they got me started working out. Then they got into boxing and I took it up as well.  I would box with them, but then I finally got into a gym for two and a half years in middle school and leading into high school.”

What are you most looking forward to in the NFL?

“I’m excited about getting a chance to prove, not only to myself and family but also to the older guys and coaches, that I’m here to play and not just here to develop.  I want to develop quickly and play as soon as possible.”

Do your tattoos have any special meaning?

“I have Aztec blood in me, so my uncle and I both have an Aztec theme in our tattoos.  I have one across my chest that is Matthew 10:33, a Bible verse that I like a lot.  It’s one of my favorites.  I’m also going to get one on my forearm, with the names of my two cousins that passed away.”

What’s one thing you’ll miss about Texas?

“The biggest thing is family because that’s home for me.  I’d rather be here because it’s so beautiful out here, but my roots are in Texas.”

What kinds of things do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?

“Anything that has to do with staying in shape, being active, if I’m not too tired from football.  I like playing cards.  We’ve started getting together some pretty competitive spades games in the locker room and that’s been fun.  I also like anything having to do with technology.  I like messing with that kind of stuff.”

What’s your favorite home-cooked meal?

"I just love all of my grandmother’s cooking."

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be?

“There are a lot of places I’d like to visit.  One that sticks out is Italy.  Rome is one place I’d like to go.  I’d like to check out the Colosseum and visit the old country.”

Who is your favorite band or artist?

“My music varies depending on my mood.  My main type of music that I listen to is hip-hop and rap.”

Is that what you listen to before games?

“Oh yeah, that’s what gets me going.”

What artist has the most music in your iPod and what artist would your teammates be surprised to find in your iPod?

"I have a lot of Lil Wayne on my iPod.  What would probably surprise people is that I also have Red Hot Chili Peppers."

What’s one movie you can watch over and over again?

“I have a couple movies I could watch.  Friday, the original one, I could watch that over and over.  There’s a movie called Blood In Blood Out that came out years ago that I’ve seen a lot, and 300 is probably on that list, too.”
