Terry bolsters line’s depth

Posted Sep 7, 2010

A backup tackle, Terry brings 48 games of NFL experience and a familiarity with Head Coach Norv Turner’s offense.

SAN DIEGO – Depth along the offensive line is part of the reason the Chargers finished 13-3 last year despite several injuries.

With the addition of tackle Adam Terry, San Diego’s line again boasts a solid group of backups.

“It’s always nice to come to a team that has a winning tradition and they’re always one step away,” Terry said. “You can’t argue with that. I just want to fit in and help in any capacity there is right now. ”

Center Scott Mruczkowski, now healthy, anchored the middle of the offensive line for more than 13 games in ’09 in place of an injured Nick Hardwick.

Tyronne Green, a versatile lineman in his second year, drew praise from Head Coach Norv Turner as one of the most improved players this offseason.

“Tyronne Green to me would be a starter at either center, guard or tackle on most teams I’ve coached on. Certainly the teams I was with in Washington and Oakland he would’ve been a starter, so I feel good about him,” Turner said Saturday before San Diego signed Terry, a 6-foot-8, 335-pound tackle.

His scraggly hair and full beard, along with his size, give him a unique appearance and offer an unmistakable first impression. But his acumen becomes apparent within a few sentences of a conversation.

“(Terry) is a very sharp guy and he picked it up awfully quickly today,” Turner said Sunday.

He spent five seasons in Baltimore and played in 48 games. Cam Cameron, Terry’s offensive coordinator with the Ravens for two years, ran an offense similar to Turner’s. Terry called it “Don Coryell-esque” and said the terminology is different but the concepts are the same.

“Granted, there’s a lot of different variables and I’m still picking up on nuances of the game that one coach might call it a different way,” Terry said. “I’m fitting in, I’m studying, I’m spending a lot of time with (assistant offensive line coach Mike Sullivan) and just trying to be ready for this game.”

Terry played in all 16 games in ’06 for a Ravens line that only allowed 17 sacks, a franchise record. The team also rushed for 1,637 yards. He started a total of 16 games for Baltimore in ’07 and ’08 before suffering a knee injury.

He expects to play at right and left tackle, which he did for the Ravens. Some place speed rushers on the right side of their defensive line and power guys on the left. Others, like the Colts, bracket their line with speed rushers.

“Footwork is footwork and that’s something I have to do right now if they brought me in to be the swing tackle. I’m just going to go and compete and try to be part of this line and help them win,” Terry said.

“I just try to detail it up. I like to think I do a lot of things pretty well. I’m not spectacular at every position but I’m a solid guy that can go out and help a team and help them win games and that’s why I’m here.”
