Te'o, Fluker Emphasize an Active Lifestyle to Youth

Posted Sep 24, 2013

Rookies D.J. Fluker and Manti Te'o led a Play 60 event at King-Chavez Academy.

The San Diego Chargers were active in the community again on Tuesday.  This time, their top two selections in the 2013 NFL Draft, first-round right tackle D.J. Fluker and second-round inside linebacker Manti Te'o, visited King-Chavez Academy.  The duo spoke of the importance of living an active life style and encouraged the students to spend at least 60 minutes a day being active.  They also answered a number of questions from the children before leading the approximately 100 students in Play 60 Junior Chargers Training Camp.

“This is what it’s all about,” said Te’o.  “This is something that I wish as a kid I could come out and meet some NFL players.  It’s important.  It’s important for us to be out here with the kids, and it’s important for the kids to be out here.  I think the times are changing.  Unfortunately, the kids like to be on the X-Box nowadays.  So it’s important for them to get some exercise, to be healthy and for us to be out here and experience that, it’s a good thing.”

Fluker echoed the same sentiments as his teammate.

“There are a lot of kids out there that do not get a great opportunity to do things like this,” he explained.  “It’s a pleasure for them to go out there and do these drills and to meet players.  For me, it’s an honor to be here.  That’s the main thing.  We want to give back to the community, and hopefully more guys in the future do the same thing.”

Having the players come visit and spend an hour meant a lot to the students in attendance.

“It’s really cool to have them here,” said one particular youngster. “I love football and I love being outside and playing.  And to have them here, it’s just really cool.  I’m having a lot of fun.  I wish we could do this all the time.”

Now, you can stay in touch with the team anytime, anywhere, on your mobile device with the official app of the San Diego Chargers.
