Telesco Visits NFL Network's "Path to the Draft"

Posted May 17, 2014

The Chargers general manager discussed the 2014 rookie class on NFL Network.

General Manager Tom Telesco was a special guest on NFL Network's "Path to the Draft" late last week.  Here is what he had to say about the Chargers 2014 draft class.

On assessing his draft this year:

Telesco: “We were happy with our plan. We really never know until we get the guys on the field and see how they do, but we were happy with what we did going in. To add Jason [Verrett] and to add Jerry [Attaochu], a cornerback and a pass rusher. The overall goal going into this draft was to add some team speed and to add some athleticism. We added some players with some youth to positions that are starting to grow a little bit older and they give us some depth. That was the plan going in. You don’t really know what you have until you see them on the field in August and in training camp.”

On 1st round pick, Jason Verrett and a comparison to Tim Jennings:

Telesco: “That’s a pretty good comparison. I guess the one thing that would compare for those two guys was that Tim [Jennings] had really excellent instincts at Georgia. You saw that with the Bears, between his ball skills and making plays on the ball. We think Jason [Verrett] has some of those same skills. As far as we evaluated him, he is a complete corner to us. He is a player who can play some man, play some zone. He can run, he can change directions, and can tackle too, and plays with a little bit of an edge. He plays with a lot of enthusiasm, and we have players like that right now, and we think he can add to that.”

On 6th round pick, running back Marion Grice and how he fits into the offense:

Telesco: “He is a nice all-around back, between running the football, pass protecting, and he has excellent hands out of the bands. He contributed a lot on special teams, not only as a kick off returner at Arizona State, but covering kicks and punts. We think he could do a lot of different things. He was very productive at Arizona State. He was 3rd in the country in all purpose yards. We think he could do a lot of things for us.”

On 3rd round pick, guard Chris Watt playing with both an edge and enthusiasm:

Telesco: “His style of play fits into how we play here. He was a very steady player for his three years at Notre Dame. We said this the day we drafted him, the man in front of him that he was supposed to block, he gets. It’s not sexy, but he gets the job done. He’s smart. He’s played a lot of football. As we saw last year, I lost count of how many offensive line combinations we had to play with due to injuries. We think he could give us some depth there, and hopefully can be a good player here for a long time.”
