After releasing two cornerbacks in the offseason, the Chargers filled a hole in their secondary with TCU cornerback
The 5-9, 189-pound cornerback not only fills a position of need but was the best player available on the team’s draft board when the 25th pick arrived. Telesco said when he and the front office knew Verrett was available, there was no doubt he was going to be a Charger.
“We always talk about the need-line crossing with the talent-line and it worked out with Jason,” Telesco said. “When we scouted him, he kind of checked off all the boxes of what he can do and everything we’re looking for so we were very pleased to have him there when we were picking.”
While it isn’t clear if Verrett will be a starter on day one, both McCoy and Telesco are looking forward to having him come in and compete during training camp.
“We’re looking to find any way we can to improve the football team,” McCoy said. “His passion, burning desire to win, you watch the way he plays the game on film and you love it. He’ll create his own role for us and we’ll take one day at a time with him.”
The biggest question about Verrett is if his smaller stature can defend some of the taller receivers in the league; a question that Telesco and McCoy know Verrett can answer.
“He played in a big time conference against a lot of really good receivers and quarterbacks and [his height] was never an issue,” Telesco said. “The way he plays his positioning, his leverage and vertical jump really hasn’t been an issue with bigger receivers.”
“The culture, the way we want to play the game, the way we want to play defense,” McCoy said. “With flying around, everyone running to the football, that’s what he does on every play. Size doesn’t matter to him. He’s a tough, very physical football player who’s very good in coverage.”
Although he plays on the opposite side of the ball, Verrett’s eagerness and passion for the game reminds McCoy and Telesco of their first-round selection last year.
“The passion for how he plays and competes and his toughness was a little bit like watching D.J. [Fluker] last year,” Telesco said. “You see the enthusiasm, the toughness, and the way he flies around, and that’s contagious. He’s extremely fast and quick with ball skills is just a nice package for us.”
