Teammates Support Butler by Bowling for a Cause

Posted May 21, 2014

Many Chargers came out to support Donald Butler's charity bowling event.

Donald Butler hails from Northern California, but when he re-signed with the Chargers earlier this offseason, he made it clear San Diego is his adopted home.  The defensive captain said he wanted to make a difference in the community, and he did just that Tuesday night co-hosting a Bowling Tournament for charity.

“I love San Diego, so to help out the city is huge for me,” he said.  “This has been my home for the past four years and is going to be for a good number of years going forward.  So I love this city and I want to help out as much as possible.”

Partnering with comedian Ricky Smith, Butler hosted the first ever RAKE-n-BOWL Charity Bowling Tournament to benefit a pair of causes – R.A.K.E’s Random Acts of Kindness Everywhere program and Juma Ventures, an organization aimed to end poverty by ensuring that young people complete a four year degree.

“We’re here to help out two organizations that benefit the community,” Butler explained. “RAKE is all about helping strangers in everyday life in everything you do.  Juma helps out the youth of San Diego academically and financially by setting them up for their future.”

Butler wasn’t the only Bolt in attendance.  In addition to over 300 fans, more than thirty Chargers past and present came out to support both Butler and the causes.

“It means a lot that they came out here,” he said.  “To say I got my guys here on our off day to support this means a lot.  It really does.  We’re all here to have a great time.”

Always happy to support charities, Malcom Floyd explained that it was a no-brainer to support a great teammate like Butler as well

“Donald is my guy,” he said.  “Everyone knows he is a great player but he is a great person, too.  You couldn’t ask for a better teammate.”

A number of Chargers are avid bowlers, getting together once a week after practice to roll a few frames.  One of those players is Vincent Brown, who is such a fan of the game he brought his own ball to the event.

“This is a great time,” he said.  “A lot of us go bowling together, but coming to this event is what it’s all about.  It’s supporting a teammate, raising money for important causes and mingling with fans.  It doesn’t get much better than this.”
