Spurlock Thrilled to be Back with Bolts

Posted Nov 29, 2012

The Chargers didn’t want to release Micheal Spurlock back in early October. But with a surplus of receivers and injuries hitting the secondary hard, the Chargers reluctantly said goodbye to the versatile veteran in order to bring in an additional cornerback in Chris Carr.

Nearly two months later, the Chargers were pleasantly surprised Spurlock was available to bring back..  After leaving San Diego, Spurlock signed with the Jaguars.  Earlier this week, Jacksonville waived him and the Chargers were quick to claim him.  Spurlock was just as eager to return to the team he didn’t want to leave in the first place.

“It feels great to be back here,” he said. “I can’t even describe how happy I am to be back.  Just to see these guys and be back around this locker room, it’s great.  I’m ready to help this team go on a run to hopefully get to the playoffs.”

Spurlock can help the Chargers in a multitude of ways, as a backup receiver and most especially as a returner in both the kicking and punting game which is where he expects to make the most immediate contribution.

“It’s all about special teams for me right now,” he said. “Special teams is where I think I can help at most right now.  I mean, if they need me to step in as a receiver I’m comfortable with that too. I know the playbook. But I think I can really help this team right now as a returner.”

Spurlock also has a unique tie with the Chargers special teams in particular. In fact, it was Assistant Head Coach-Special Teams Rich Bisaccia who phoned him to tell him he was coming back to San Diego.

“I was talking to him, and he told me that a claim had been put in and that I was going to be a Charger again,” said Spurlock. “Me and him had been staying in contact.  He’s like family.  I’ve been around him when I was getting ready to go to college, and then I spent four or five years with him in Tampa Bay and here.  So he’s family to me.  We stay in contact whether we’re on the same team or not, so it’s good to be reunited with him.”

Now that they are reunited, Spurlock is looking forward to getting out on the playing field and helping the Chargers on Sunday.

“I’m just excited to be back here,” he said. “I’m willing to do whatever it takes to help this team win.”
