Spikes Starts His 200th Career Game

Posted Sep 11, 2012

Just making it to the NFL is hard enough.

Starting 100 games is a noteworthy accomplishment.

But starting in 200?  That’s almost inconceivable.

But there Takeo Spikes was tonight, taking the field for the Chargers for the 200th start of his illustrious career.

“This is definitely a milestone I take seriously,” said the 15-year veteran. “You look at all the greats who haven’t done it and see what you’ve accomplished, and also see the few who have done it, it means a lot.”

Spikes continues to inspire his teammates, even veterans who have been around for a while such as Shaun Phillips.

“To play in 200 football games, that’s huge,” said Phillips. “It’s rare. A guy like that is a rare breed. There’s only a handful of guys that can do that.  The way he takes care of his body and the way he prepares for each game, and the passion and love he has for it, it inspires me.  The amount of heart he has, I look up to him. I try to do whatever he does. If he’s in the hot tub, I’m in the hot tub.  If he’s in the sauna, I’m in the sauna.  I want to do everything he does.”

Still, despite all his individual goals, only one thing matters to Spikes – winning that elusive Super Bowl title.

“At the end of the day, it’s all about one thing,” he said. “And that’s getting that championship.  I want to get that ring.”
