Spanos bros. make top 40 under 40

Posted May 21, 2010

In June, the Greek America Foundation named A.G. and John Spanos two of Greek America’s Forty Under Forty, a distinction that honors 40 young leaders of Greek decent in various industries and disciplines.

A.G. and John Spanos have always made their father, Dean, proud.

Since they were young kids, they've always led by example, a business acumen that was instilled in them at a very young age. Now, both hold positions in the Chargers front office, and remain poised and eager to carry on their family's legacy of quality and integrity in business.

In recognition of their commitment and dedication, the Greek America Foundation, in conjunction with Greek America Magazine, selected the brothers as two of their Forty Under Forty award recipients. This new award recognizes young leaders of Greek America age 40 and under for success in their professional endeavors. A blue-ribbon panel of business and community leaders, along with members of the organization, selected the final 40 winners.

"Our winners are not merely rising stars, they are bright, shining stars successful in business, arts and culture, philanthropic endeavors, athletics and other walks of life," said Gregory Pappas, founder of the Greek America Foundation.

A.G., 31, is the Chargers Executive Vice President – Executive Officer and John, 30, serves as Director of College Scouting. Both have served in various capacities within the organization since they were in high school. A.G. primarily on the business side, while younger brother John has excelled in football operations.

Both were "extremely humbled" and, admittedly, a bit surprised by the mere nomination as well as the news of being selected out of over 400 applicants.

"I'm more than appreciative of such an honor," A.G. said when asked how he felt upon hearing news of the award. "I heard about the award before, but didn't think I'd be nominated. We're in amazing company and I am looking forward to meeting all the other recipients. Our grandfather placed a strong emphasis on Greek culture and I am very proud of that. I feel a strong connection to my heritage as a result of my upbringing."

John echoed his brother's sentiment and went on to say it is a tremendous honor to even be considered let alone a recipient, but then quickly deflected praise back to A.G.

"I’m very proud of what my brother has accomplished, and to share this with him is going to be a lot of fun," John said. "I'm not sure how deserving I am, but I'm humbled and honored. My brother and I are very close and it'll be nice receiving this award with him."

The Spanos brothers will be featured in a special edition of Greek America Magazine, which is due to hit newsstands in June, complete with a photograph and biography highlighting each of their accomplishments.

The awards ceremony and gala will be held in Chicago on June 11-13 to honor all the "40/40" winners.

Dean, who has been bestowed numerous awards for his accomplishments in business and philanthropy, couldn’t be more thrilled.

"As a parent, nothing makes me more proud than seeing my children succeed in whatever they chose to pursue," he said.

A.G. and John pride themselves on hard work and try to exemplify a strong sense of character and integrity in everything they do. Both agree their work ethic derives from their father, but especially their grandfather, Alex Spanos.

"It all started with our grandfather and his tremendous philanthropy and community leadership," A.G. explained. "We understand the importance of what it means to be a good corporate citizen as a result of my dad and grandfather's influence. I feel very lucky to be a part of the Chargers organization, and the opportunity to continue the legacy of being a good community partner."

"It all starts with our grandfather and the example he set," John continued. "Not only his leadership skills but the work ethic he instilled in his children and grandchildren. We always try to lead by example."
