Season Ticket Member Announced 5th Round Draft Pick Ryan Carrethers

Posted May 13, 2014

For the third straight year, the Chargers sent a Season Ticket Member to New York City to announce a draft pick.

Season Ticket Member Joe Patrico has had a number of memorable moments during his lifetime as a Chargers fanatic, chief among them traveling to catch the team in the Super Bowl on Jan. 29, 1995.

Almost 20 years later, he added a memory most fans can only dream of as he stood on the floor of Radio City Music Hall and introduced the newest Charger to the world.

“With the 165th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the San Diego Chargers select Ryan Carrethers, defensive tackle, Arkansas State.”

Patrico was a grand prize winner of the team’s annual renewal sweepstakes, which awarded numerous prizes for Season Ticket Members who re-upped for the 2014 season.  This marked the third straight year the Bolts awarded a trip to New York City to announce a Chargers draft pick, and Patrico fondly recalled his one of a kind experience.

“I was sitting with Bob (Wick) and Chris (Smith) from the Chargers and they showed me everything,” he recalled.  “They showed me how they track the selections and we were joking about different players.  And then it was time to get serious and the call came in.  They helped me fill out the card and all the cameras were on me.  I went ahead and announced the pick. It’s a great memory.”

While many teams send a fan to the draft, Patrico said the Chargers made his experience more special than anyone else’s.

“It was a fantastic experience,” he said.  “The whole draft experience was more fun than I thought it would be.  It was really neat and there was a ton of excitement.  The guys from the Chargers were so much fun and pulled us up on the stage before the draft started and let us put on the headsets.  We talked to them while no other team let their representative do that.  It was really neat. It was a great, great trip and a great time.”

Patrico was initially supposed to announce the team’s fourth round selection.  When the Chargers surprised him in April to let him know he won the sweepstakes, he jokingly asked what would happen if the team traded away that pick.  Sure enough, General Manager Tom Telesco did just that in order to move up in the second round to select Jerry Attaochu.

“They told me ahead of time what would happen if we traded it away,” Patrico said. “It kind of made the experience even more special.  It made it a longer day.  It was pretty ironic that it happened after I joked about it.  I was having dinner when the trade was made and I got a call and they told me.”

For the chance to win a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity like Patrico and have access to many other special perks, become a Chargers Season Ticket Member for the 2014 Season.
