Ryan Mathews Sees Backfield as "One Big Weapon"

Posted Aug 6, 2013

Ryan Mathews chimes in with his outlook on the 2013 season.

It seems everyone has an opinion on Ryan Mathews

Coming off an admittedly disappointing, injury-riddled season, NFL pundits are quick to give their two cents about the Chargers running back and what kind of season they think he will have.

Well, someone else has an opinion about Ryan Mathews as well – and that’s Ryan Mathews.

So far through training camp, the four-year veteran is “having fun” out on the field and it shows with some of the plays he’s been able to make.  Mathews credits head coach Mike McCoy and offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt for creating a system that allows him to showcase his talents.

“I like what they are doing,” he said. “It’s fun and aggressive.  There are a lot of run plays and a lot of pass plays so it’s balanced.  So I’m excited about it and how well I can play in it.  And I know everyone else is too. I just want to help the team as much as I can.  Whether that is 10 plays, 20 plays or 100 plays I want to do what I can to help us win.  Starting Thursday I want to better myself, help my team get better and keep having fun.”

When Mathews speaks, he does so with an air of rejuvenation.  His confidence is sky high in  believing the offense is capable of having a special season.

“Training camp has been good,” he said. “It feels good to be out there with the fellas and be on that grind.  I’m learning to run behind our big linemen and with Philip Rivers and Ronnie (Brown) and Danny (Woodhead), it’s just been fun. And I like that it’s been fun.”

One of the major reasons behind Mathews’ confidence is what he’s seen from the offensive line thus far.  Needless to say, he’s been impressed.

“The offensive line has been doing a great job opening up holes for me,” he said. “They are pushing guys around.  We have a great defensive line and linebackers, so that we are having some success running the ball against some of the best guys in the league is encouraging.  They are big, fast and strong so I’m just loving running behind them.  I like how they block, and with everything through this whole process of camp we’re only going to get better.”

As a result, Mathews sees big things ahead for not only himself, but all the running backs on the Chargers.

“We can accomplish a lot.  We can be one of the best running back groups in the league.  We have a lot of different guys with a lot of different talents.  Everyone we have is good in their own separate way.  Putting us together, we are one big weapon.”

To watch Mathews in action, be sure to come out to Qualcomm Stadium for Thursday night’s preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks.  Click here for tickets.

Also, if you are attending the game, please review the new NFL public safety policy limiting the size and type of bags that may be brought into the stadium.
