Roundup: Free Agency Frenzy

Posted Mar 14, 2014

Here is your recap to all the recent additions to the Chargers.

It has without a doubt been a whirlwind week here at Chargers Park.  If you feel lost in the shuffle, don’t worry.  Here is your roundup of all the team’s free agent moves through Friday.

The first domino to fall actually took place two weeks ago on February 28 when Donald Butler re-signed.  The defensive captain was ecstatic to return to the only team he’s ever suited up for.

This past Saturday, the Bolts locked up another one of their captains by re-signing special teams ace Darrell Stuckey.  The safety also elevated his play on defense toward the end of the season, so bringing Stuckey back was a no-brainer.

Chad Rinehart marked the third player to be re-signed when he inked a two-year deal with the Chargers on Monday.  The guard initially joined the club on a one-year deal in 2013, and in his first season in San Diego Rinehart helped anchor a revitalized offensive line.

Once the new league year began Tuesday afternoon, the Chargers landed one of the top running backs available in former Colt Donald Brown.  Fresh off a career season in Indianapolis, Brown figures to play a significant role alongside Ryan Mathews and Danny Woodhead in the backfield.  In fact, he already is referring to the group as a “three-headed monster”.

The second player imported was David Johnson from Pittsburgh.  A self proclaimed throwback player, Johnson brings great versatility to the team as he is capable of playing both tight end and fullback.

On the other side of the ball, the Bolts signed another former Colt in Kavell Conner.  The inside linebacker has had success in the past as a starter and on special teams.  Conner figures to provide great depth behind Butler and Manti Te'o in the middle.

Philip Rivers is undoubtedly the Chargers quarterback, but the team agreed to terms with a well-tested veteran in Kellen Clemens to back him up.  Clemens started nine games for the St. Louis Rams last season and will be a reliable source for Rivers to lean on.

Another linebacker the Chargers added was Reggie Walker, who the club brought back on a two-year deal.  Initially acquired the week prior to the 2013 season, Walker was a valuable find by General Manager Tom Telesco.  He played both inside and outside linebacker and had his best professional season to date.

The next move the Bolts made was landing the talented Brandon Ghee, formerly of the Cincinnati Bengals.  The cornerback has battled injuries over his NFL career, but he has the skillset to excel at this level. Upon arriving in San Diego, Ghee said he is looking forward to a fresh start with his new team.

Late Friday afternoon, the Chargers announced they agreed to terms with Richard MarshallThe cornerback had a successful 2013 season with the team, as San Diego went 5-2 with him in the starting lineup.
