Rivers Sets Impressive Marks in Win

Posted Dec 30, 2012

Philip Rivers’ stats on Sunday weren’t overtly noteworthy.

The Chargers signal caller was just 13 for 17 for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Still, his numbers were good enough for a 142.0 passer rating. It was his seventh game of the season with a rating over 100 and the Chargers went 6-1 when he did.

As has been the case for the last month, Rivers did what he had to do to get the win. He was incredibly efficient as he led the Bolts to a 24-21 season-ending victory over the arch rival Oakland Raiders. Rivers threw two touchdown passes with no interceptions, finishing December with eight touchdown passes and only one interception. He also had only one interception in the last six games of the season.

“We’ve played better and we’ve managed everything better,” Rivers said of the team’s strong finish to the season, going 3-1 over their final four games.  “There’s a small margin between us sitting here at 10-6 and us sitting here at 7-9.  We’re talking about three or four plays, and we could pick from about 20, and then change three or four of them, and we’re setting here a different team.”

Rivers finishes the season throwing for 3,606 yards, 26 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. In the process, he set some impressive records. He passed the 3,500-yard plateau for the season in the first quarter, marking his fifth straight season reaching that mark, the most in franchise history.  Rivers also became just the sixth quarterback in NFL history to throw for 25 touchdowns in five consecutive seasons, joining elite company such as Peyton Manning, Brett Favre, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers and Dan Marino.
