Richard Marshall Returning on One-Year Deal

Posted Mar 14, 2014

The San Diego Chargers are bringing back cornerback Richard Marshall.

Richard Marshall provided some veteran stability when he was acquired in the middle of training camp last season.  Today, the San Diego Chargers announced that the cornerback is returning on a one-year deal.

Marshall appeared in every game for the Bolts in 2013, starting six regular season and two postseason contests.  He was thrust into the starting lineup over the final seven weeks of the season, and the Chargers finished 5-2 over that stretch. Overall, Marshall totaled 61 tackles, six passes defensed, one tackle for loss and one fumble recovery.  In the postseason, he notched eight defensive tackles, recovered two key fumbles and led the special teams with four tackles.

The 2014 season marks Marshall’s ninth year in the NFL.  The 5-11, 198-pounder entered the league as a second round pick (58th overall) of the Carolina Panthers in 2006.  He spent five years in Carolina before making one year pit stops with the Arizona Cardinals and Miami Dolphins prior to San Diego. For his career, Marshall’s recorded 510 tackles, 67 passes defensed, 18 interceptions, seven sacks and two touchdowns.  The cornerback’s return is the 10th transaction made by the Chargers during free agency thus far.
