Rich Gannon: "These Chargers Have Impressed Me"

CBS analyst and former NFL star Rich Gannon weighs in on the Chargers.

Rich Gannon knows football.

The four-time Pro Bowler and the former league MVP in 2002, Gannon now spends his days cohosting The Sirius Blitz on Sirius XM NFL Radio and calling games on CBS.  He will be this week’s color analyst when the Bolts take on the Chiefs, and he recently chimed in with his thoughts on the San Diego Chargers season.

Here is what he had to say:

“These Chargers have impressed me.  I think it all starts with the quarterback, and I love the way Philip Rivers is playing.  Over the past couple years he may not have trusted his protection and the running game had been sporadic, and I understand that.  I just think he looks much more comfortable in this offense.  He is playing faster and you see it in his feet.  His completion percentage is off the charts at around 70%.  I think what’s amazing is you go back and look and he’s missing some of his top receivers expected going into the season.  Danario Alexander went out in training camp and Malcom Floyd went down (in Week 2).  Yet they plug in other guys and it hasn’t had a huge impact on him while you’d see that with other players.

I’ve really been impressed with what Ryan Mathews has done this year.  He has ability and toughness and he’s much more decisive I think in the hole.  You also look at some of the changes on the offensive line.  D.J. Fluker I think is going to be a great player in this league for a long time.  You look at everything they’ve accomplished in year one and how productive they’ve been – they have the most amount of 10-play drives in football, the fewest number of three-and-out’s in football, the way they are with time of possession and they are the best in the National Football League on third down – to me you look at all these things in year one, that’s impressive.  There is a new play caller, a new head coach and Philip has had to learn a whole new offense. So again, to me, that’s been very impressive.”
