Recapping 2013: The Tight Ends

Posted Jan 31, 2014

A complete breakdown of the tight ends from the 2013 season.

The Chargers tight end corps revolved around a future Hall-of-Famer, a rising playmaker and a pair of primary blockers.  All together, they formed a top notch unit for the Bolts.

For the seventh time in the last nine seasons, Gates led the Chargers in receptions.  His 77 catches were good for 872 yards, which ranked second on the team, and four of them went for touchdowns.  In San Diego’s 41-38 win over the Kansas City Chiefs, Gates became the fourth tight end in NFL history to eclipse 700 catches and 9,000 total yards for his career.  Playing in his 158th career game, he became the fastest tight end to record 9,000 yards and third fastest to 700 receptions.  Across the league, Gates had the third most receiving yards among tight ends and the fourth most catches.  In the postseason, the veteran notched three catches for 15 yards.

In his second season, Green blossomed into a big play threat for the Bolts.  He caught 17 balls for 376 yards and three touchdowns. Green averaged 22.1 yards per reception, which was the most of any player in the NFL with at least 17 catches.   His first career score was a 60 yard catch and sprint in which he blew past defenders at Kansas City. In the playoffs, Green recorded five catches for 41 yards and one touchdown.

Brought in as a free agent in the offseason, John Phillips was having a productive year before it was cut short.  He suffered a knee injury in the Week 16 win over the Oakland Raiders that landed him on the Reserve-Injured list.  Prior to that, he started six games and recorded four catches for 30 yards.  Phillips was used primarily as a blocker and excelled in that role.  After his injury, the Bolts signed Jake Byrnes who took on the same responsibilities for the final regular season game and two playoff appearances.
