Quarter Pole: How Does the AFC West Stack Up?

Posted Oct 1, 2013

See how the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders stack up four games into the season.

At the quarter-pole of the 2013 season, here is where the other AFC West teams stack up.

Denver Broncos (4-0)

Philip Rivers is one of the hottest quarterbacks in the NFL to start the season, but Peyton Manning is right there with him.  The veteran passer is off to a tremendous start, leading his team to a perfect 4-0 record with victories over the Baltimore Ravens, New York Giants, Oakland Raiders and Philadelphia Eagles.  Manning has thrown for the most passing yards (1,470), yards per game (367.5) and touchdowns (16). He ranks first among regular starters in completion percentage (75.0) and passer rating (138.0). As a result, the Broncos have scored an NFL-best 179 points (44. 8 per game), the second-most points in a team’s first four games in NFL history, trailing only the 1966 Dallas Cowboys (183 points). Denver’s next four games come in Dallas against the Cowboys, at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars, in Indianapolis against the Colts and at home against the Washington Redskins.

Kansas City Chiefs (4-0)

After finishing 2012 with the league’s worst record (2-14), many expected the Kansas City Chiefs to be vastly improved.  Just four games into the season, they have already doubled their win total from last year.  Leading the charge is Alex Smith, who the team brought in via a trade with the San Francisco 49ers to be KC’s starting QB.  The San Diego native has responded by throwing for 957 yards and seven touchdowns while completing 60.3% of his passes.  Running back Jamaal Charles leads the way on the ground with 289 yards on 70 rushes (4.1 yards per carry), but has also been a force in the passing game as well leading the Chiefs in receptions (23), yards (213) and touchdowns (two). Defensively, Kansas City ranks seventh in total defense (306.2 yards per game) and second against the pass (188.8 ypg).  They also lead the league in sacks with 18 as Justin Houston is tied for the most sacks in the NFL with 7.5. The Chiefs play their next game in Tennessee against the Titans before returning home for three straight against the Oakland Raiders, Houston Texans and Cleveland Browns.

Oakland Raiders (1-3)

In his first season as starting quarterback for the Oakland Raiders, Terrelle Pryor had three impressive games before missing last week’s game with a concussion.   Pryor has completed 53 of 81 passes (65.4%) with two touchdowns and a passer rating of 86.7.  He’s also been effective on the ground, rushing for 198 yards on 26 attempts.  With Pryor and running back Darren McFadden (215 yards) leading the way, Oakland ranks sixth in the NFL with 137.5 rushing yards per game.   In the passing game, Denarius Moore has been the Raiders main weapon with 15 catches for 233 yards and a pair of touchdowns.  Overall, the Raiders are 1-3 having beaten the Jacksonville Jaguars while losing to the Indianapolis Colts, Denver Broncos and Washington Redskins.  Three of their next four games come at home, starting Sunday night against the San Diego Chargers.  Then they travel to KC to face the Chiefs, return home for a bye week followed by home games against the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles.
