Q&A with Randy McMichael

Posted Sep 16, 2010

Find out how much the tight end appreciates playing for the Chargers, what it's like to share a positional group with Antonio Gates and what article of clothing he can't stop adjusting.

Carter Wells; La Mesa, Calif.

Are you excited about the possibility of using more three tight end sets?

I’m excited about being here. It’s not about the sets. I’m just excited to have the opportunity to compete for championships. I think that’s the biggest thing to be excited about.

Brian Lunt; Westwood, Kan.

What do you feel will be your biggest attribute to the Chargers?

Experience. There aren’t too many things that I haven’t seen in this league. The experience I have in every situation is the biggest attribute.

Julio Gonzalez; Darien, Conn.

How does it feel to play with Antonio Gates and Philip Rivers?

It feels really good. On the East Coast, I’ve only heard about (Gates) but never had the opportunity to see how he works in practices and games. I see why he’s the best tight end in football by the way he works, prepares and how intelligent he is. The biggest thing I like about Philip (Rivers) is his competitive spirit. Not just (playing) quarterback, but he’s probably one of the best competitors I’ve been around on the football field. He’s a fun guy to play with and be around. He always joking and laughing. It’s been a real pleasure so far.

Jameel Sabur; King of Prussia, Pa.

How is it working to create chemistry with Phillip Rivers?

It’s coming along real well. The one thing you want to establish with your new quarterback is trust. Being where you are supposed to be when he needs you there. I think we are getting there, and as we get used to each other it’s going to get better.

Aracely Cuevas; San Diego

Why do you wear your hat backward? How long have you done that?

I’ve been doing that forever. By the end of the day that hat would have done a whole 360 degrees around my head. I keep it (tilted) all over the place.

Stephen Payne; Knoxville, Tenn.

When was the last time you played special teams?

My rookie year. It’s been a long time, but I pride myself on being a football player.

Devin Moore; Windsor, Calif.

How has it been working with one of the all-time great tight ends Antonio Gates, and have the two of you been able to help each other get better?

Looking out for each other on the field and giving each other our experience. If I see something I tell him. If he asks a question, I’ll answer. The same goes for me. If I have a question, he’ll answer it. I think that chemistry will continue to grow.

Michael Harris; Henderson, Nev.

Which aspect of the offense do you see yourself contributing most to? The running or passing game?

Both. I might not catch as many balls as I used to. But I think a little bit of both.

Robert Pina; San Diego

Do you play Madden Football?

No. That’s one thing I refuse to get caught up in.

Carl Blanchard; El Cajon, Calif.

Do you and Antonio Gates ever have competitions at practice?

Not really. We are both laid back and like to have fun. I like to have fun with Kris (Wilson) a lot too. We are a little bit older than him. Sometimes we tag team and get on him.

Arturo Godinez; San Diego

How do you feel when you put on a Chargers jersey?

It was awesome. You could feel the energy of winning. When you show up at the stadium or in the locker room, these guys know what they are doing. They know what it’s all about. We haven’t gotten to the level where everybody wants, but we know what it takes to get there.
