Q&A: Ryan Mathews

Posted Nov 4, 2010

The rookie running back discusses his tattoos, his relationship with his mom and why he wasn't disappointed that he didn't get a Heisman ceremony invite last year.

The rookie running back has rushed for 340 yards on 4.4 yards per carry and scored his second touchdown in a win against the Titans last week.

He also has 13 receptions for 97 yards.

The Chargers drafted Mathews, 6-foot, 218 pounds, with the No. 12 overall pick of this year's draft.

Brandon Smith; Springfield, Mo.

At what point in your life did you realize that going pro was a real possibility and describe what it felt like to get that phone call from the Chargers on draft day.

I didn’t realize it until my sophomore year in college. It was unbelievable and a priceless moment. Words can’t describe how happy I was.

Deann English; Tacoma, Wash.

What are your tattoos?

I have a lot of them. I have a lot of random stuff. I have a heart over my chest that says ‘Momma’s boy’. I have ‘No regrets’ on my arm, tribals, wings on my stomach, a crown, a sugar skull. I have everything.

Russ Prado; Mangilao, Guam

Since football is a big part of your life, how much time do you actually spend playing World of Warcraft? I am also curious, what realm and faction you play in?

I really don’t play it that much. It’s slowed down since football started. I play a couple hours a week. I can’t tell you my realm but I play Horde and Rogue.

Duncan Szarmes; Honolulu, Hawaii

What’s your favorite part about being in San Diego besides playing for the Chargers?

The weather and the fans are great. It’s a beautiful place. Everything about San Diego is great.

Cecilio Velasco; Corcoran, Calif.

What’s your favorite place to eat in Bakersfield and Fresno?

Doghouse in Fresno. I order the tri-tip sandwich.

Josh Cadava; Spring Valley, Calif.

Why you chose No. 24?

It’s close to No. 21, but I want to start my own legacy.

John Smith; San Diego

How disappointed were you after not even being invited to the Heisman ceremony despite having the most rushing yards in the NCAA?

“I wasn’t disappointed at all. A lot of that stuff is about politics. It’s about what school you go to and what conference you play in. I’m here now and it’s meant to be and I’m thankful.”

Jason; Toronto

How’s it looking on the field now that you have more experience in the NFL? Are you seeing plays and blocks develop in “slow-mo” like they did in college?

Everything is starting to slow down. The more reps I get the slower everything gets.

Jonathan Mendez; San Diego

What’s the reason for wearing the dark visor?

It looks cool.

Diego Alarcon; Pensacola, Fla.

What nationality are your parents?

My mom is white and my dad is black. They are both from Riverside, Calif.

Juan Corona; Burbank; Calif.

What’s your biggest inspiration outside of football?

My mom. She worked so hard throughout her life. To be able to give her a good life is a positive on my part.

Art Bleich; Chula Vista, Calif.

What music do you listen to get pumped up before a game?

I listen to everything from rap to gun metal.
