Q&A: Luis Castillo

Posted Sep 10, 2010

Find out how he became interested in football as a Dominican immigrant, what he'd do with his Northwestern education if he didn't play football and how he reads offensive linemen.

Mariano Arzate; Mexico City

What will be the key on defense to lead the team to the Super Bowl?

The key is not to be concerned about statistics and individual goals, but to play mistake-free football and do whatever it takes to help this team win.

Josue Hernandez; Pomona, Calif.

What NFL player did you look up to in college?

I focused on defensive linemen or defensive tackles around the league who were good or finishing their careers. Guys like La’Roi Glover and Warren Sapp were guys who played the game the way it’s supposed to be played.

Art Bleich; San Diego

What kind of music do you listen to before a game to get pumped up?

Whatever Travis Johnson has on the iPod in the locker room.

Tom Conlon; San Pedro, Calif.

Thank you for the time you spent overseas with the troops. How do you think you were affected personally by the experience both on and off the field?

It was an incredible experience that changed my perspective on the commitment and sacrifice that military personnel give up to protect our freedom. It’s more than we can ever comprehend or thank them for.

Mitchell Ochoa; El Cajon, Calif.

Who has the biggest personality on the defensive line?

Ogemdi Nwagbuo because it’s subtle. It’s unexpected.

Gary Robinson; Juan Dolio, Dominican Republic

How did you become interested in football?

I was 11 years old and couldn’t hit a curveball. A buddy of mine in fifth grade asked me if I wanted to go out for the football team and that was it. I didn’t have a father figure in the house. My family, being Dominican immigrants, didn’t know much about (football) so I didn’t grow up with it. It was more of a whim because my buddy told me when sign-ups were.

Phil Haynes; Chesapeake, Va.

Who was your favorite NFL team growing up?

I went with whoever was winning, and the Dallas Cowboys were winning around that time.

Bill Scott; Sioux City, Iowa

What do you enjoy most about community service?

The ability to give back and be grateful for all the blessings we’ve received as professional athletes. All the special things we get to be a part of. The benefits of being in the league (are) a blessing and we are all thankful. Giving back for us is a way to say thank you to the community.

Rick Willinsky; Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Besides the obvious, down and distance, what are some of the signs you've picked up from offensive lineman over your years in the league as to whether it’s run or pass on any given play during a game?

You can read an offensive lineman’s mannerism. (You can tell) how he gets in his stance and how much weight he has leaning forward. Sometimes you can see their eyes and where they are looking. If they are looking around a lot they might be trying to pick up a blitz as opposed to worrying about you. Formation is big also. There’s a lot of different keys we focus on. You get to a point about the second quarter of a game when you start seeing things without seeing them. Subconsciously you’re feeling things without understanding why.

Ryan R.; San Diego

Other than playing professional football, what could you see yourself doing for a living?

My mother started her company 20 years ago and my goal was to take it over. I went to Northwestern, (studied) economics and I was always interested in (business).
