When talking about Michigan’s Taylor Lewan, one word comes to mind.

Nasty.

The tackle possesses the type of mean streak on the field that coaches crave, playing a physical brand of ball until the whistle is blown.  Constantly looking for an opponent to hit, that demeanor combined with his outstanding skillset has Lewan poised to be an early selection in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Standing 6-7, 309-pounds, the Wolverine star has the prototypical size teams covet.  Over his time in the maize and blue, Lewan started 48 of 50 games predominantly at left tackle.  Following his senior year in 2013, he was a Second Team All –American and First Team All-Big Ten selection.  Lewan was also one of the stars at the Combine, finishing among the best in most key metrics for those at his position.  He ranked first in the 40-yard dash (4.87), first in broad jump (117.0 inches) and third in vertical jump (30.5 inches).

Many have compared Lewan to Jake Long, which is understandable considering their style of play and the fact both suited up collegiately at Michigan.  At this point, Lewan is probably more dominant at run blocking than he is at pass protection. Once he locks his hands on a defender, he drives him backward with the greatest of ease, paving lanes for his running back to attack.  In protection, he has had success blocking all types of power moves and has the foot quickness to set the edge, although some draft experts point out he’s struggled at times against speedy pass rushers.

Nonetheless, Lewan has the skillset and demeanor to be a valuable tackle in the NFL, and many expect him to be among the top three offensive linemen selected on May 8th.

Combine Metrics
40-yard Dash: 4.87
Bench Press: 29 reps
Vertical Jump: 30.5 inches
Broad Jump: 117.0 inches
