Prospect Profile: Stephon Tuitt

Posted Apr 15, 2014

Learn more about Notre Dame defensive end Stephon Tuitt.

In order to familiarize fans with some of the top names in the 2014 NFL Draft, Chargers.com will be highlighting a different prospect each weekday leading up to the first day of the draft on May 8th.

We continue the series with a scouting report of Notre Dame’s Stephon Tuitt.

Name: Stephon Tuitt
School: Notre Dame
Height: 6-5
Weight: 304 pounds
Position: Defensive End

When talking about Notre Dame defensive line prospects for the 2014 NFL Draft, the first name that comes to most fans minds is defensive tackle Louis Nix.  However, analysts and experts alike know there is another top prospect available this may in Stephon Tuitt.

The Fighting Irish defensive end burst onto the season in 2012 as a sophomore.  He was a Second Team All-American that year, posting 47 tackles, 13.0 tackles for loss, 12.0 sacks and three forced fumbles.  Tuitt followed his breakout campaign with another solid season in 2013, being named a First Team All-Independent selection after recording a career-high 49 tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks and one forced fumble.  He finished his career tied for third in Notre Dame’s storied history with 21.5 career sacks.

Physically speaking, Tuitt is everything teams look for in a defensive end prospect.  He stands a muscular 6-5, 304-pounds, and has exceptional speed for someone his size.  Tuitt mainly played defensive end in a 3-4 technique in college, but many believe he will be equally effective as a 4-3 defensive tackle at the next level.  The junior is able to generate a lot of power out of the snap, and is perhaps at his best when bull rushing offensive linemen.  His versatility is also a valuable commodity as he has the ability to line up in a variety of spots along the defensive line.

Tuitt was a bystander for nearly all testing at February’s Scouting Combine after doctors found a Jones fracture in his left foot.  He is expected to make a full recovery within two months, so the injury shouldn’t negatively affect his draft stock.  In fact, as the process gets further along, Tuitt has been a fast riser increasingly being seen as someone who could be an impact player from Week 1.
