The more that analysts and experts delve into this year’s draft class, the more they come away impressed with the talent at defensive tackle.

One name that has risen during the scouting process is Ra’Shede Hageman.

The Minnesota star has ideal size, measuring in a 6-6, 310-pounds, blended with rare athleticism and speed for a big man.  He blew everyone away at the Scouting Combine, recording a 5.02 40-yard dash, 32 reps on the bench press (third best for a DT), a 35.5 inch vertical jump and 114.0 inch broad jump.  With those metrics, it’s no wonder scouts marvel at his explosive burst and brute power.  Hageman routinely bullies linemen backward at the line of scrimmage, and is a ferocious tackler.  He is also versatile enough to line up as a nose tackle in a 3-4 while also playing a three-technique in a 4-3.  While there are some defensive tackles known mainly for their stout run stuffing ability, Hageman is a top notch pass rusher who has the capability to wreak havoc on quarterbacks.

Hageman was a tight end in college who converted to the defensive line as a redshirt freshman.  Still quite raw, he improved by leaps and bounds each year, and in 2013 was a Third-team AP All-American and first-team All-Big Ten selection.  He led Minnesota with 13.0 tackles for loss last season in addition to 38 tackles, 2.0 sacks and one interception.  For his career he notched 91 tackles, 24.0 tackles for loss, 10.0 sacks, two fumbles forced and one pick.

Critics note he needs to play with better leverage, and that he will be a tad old for a rookie at 24.  However, there is no denying Hageman’s pure skills and that he has the potential to be a home run selection for whichever team drafts him.

Combine Metrics
40-yard Dash: 5.02
Bench Press: 32 reps
Vertical Jump: 35.5 inches
Broad Jump: 114.0 inches
