Prospect Profile: Odell Beckham

Posted Apr 11, 2014

Learn more about LSU wide receiver Odell Beckham.

In order to familiarize fans with some of the top names in the 2014 NFL Draft, Chargers.com will be highlighting a different prospect each weekday leading up to the first day of the draft on May 8th.

We continue the series with a scouting report of LSU wide receiver Odell Beckham.

Name: Odell Beckham
School: LSU
Height: 5-11
Weight: 198 pounds
Position: Wide Receiver

Odell Beckham certainly has the pedigree to be a top notch athlete, especially at LSU.  After all, his mother was an All-American and National Champion sprinter at the school while his father was a starting running back for the Tigers. Thus, it’s no wonder Beckham won the Paul Hornung Award as the nation’s most versatile player for his excellence as a wide receiver and returner.

For his career, Beckham recorded 132 catches, 2,340 yards and 12 touchdowns.  Still, his 2013 campaign was clearly his best as the junior set career-highs with 59 receptions for 1,152 yards and eight touchdowns.  Combined with his incredible special teams skills in which he returned 19 punts for 160 yards and 32 kickoffs for 845 yards, Beckham broke LSU’s single-season all-purpose yardage record with 2,315 total yards.

A fast athlete who is also very smooth and fluid, the 5-11, 198-pounder is great in and out of his cuts with a quick initial burst.  He is a nightmare to bring down once the ball is in his hand, a legit threat to take it to the house each time.  Although not a big target, he can beat any defense on a vertical route and isn’t afraid to go over the middle to make the tough catch.

Beckham can afford to add some strength as he posted only seven reps at the bench press in February at the Scouting Combine.  While he makes difficult catches look routine, he does have a tendency to drop some easy ones.   Still, with his home run ability at a moment’s notice, both fans and experts alike look forward to watching him on Sundays for years to come.

Combine Metrics
40-yard Dash: 4.43
Bench Press: seven reps
Vertical Jump: 38.5 inches
Broad Jump: 122.0 inches
