Prospect Profile: Lamarcus Joyner

Posted Apr 24, 2014

Learn more about Florida State cornerback Lamarcus Joyner.

In order to familiarize fans with some of the top names in the 2014 NFL Draft, Chargers.com will be highlighting a different prospect each weekday leading up to the first day of the draft on May 8th.

We continue the series with a scouting report of Florida State’s Lamarcus Joyner.

Name: Lamarcus Joyner
School: Florida State
Height: 5-8
Weight: 184 pounds
Position: Cornerback

Don’t let Lamarcus Joyner’s smaller stature fool you.  Even though he stands 5-8, 184-pounds, he plays like a corner who’s a good four or five inches taller, which is why he was so effective during his tenure at Florida State.

Joyner was a key cog in helping the Seminole’s capture the BCS Championship in 2013.  He recorded 59 tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss, four passes defensed, three forced fumbles, one interception and actually led the team in sacks with 5.0 despite being a cornerback.  As a result, Joyner was a First Team All-ACC pick and finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award as the top defensive back in the nation and the Bronko Nagurski Award  as the country’s best defensive player.  For his career, he notched 197 tackles, 21 passes defensed, 10.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and 2.0 sacks.

An energetic sparkplug, Joyner is a fiery playmaker.  Confident in his abilities, he has a natural feel for the game allowing him to make plays on the ball.  Joyner is excellent blitzing the quarterback off the edge as well as effective against the run, possessing proper instincts on when to leave his man and make a beeline for the ball carrier.  Joyner also provides some additional versatility, having lined up some at safety as well the ability to be a returner on special teams.

A true football junkie, Joyner is the type of player teammates, coaches and fans tend to love.  Add in his natural skillset and it’s easy to see why teams aren’t concerned about his slight frame and are more enamored with his playmaking ability.

Combine Metrics
