The Chargers’ own Eric Weddle is one of the best safeties in the NFL who many view as the ideal player at that position.

Texas’ Kenny Vaccaro must be pretty darn good then to be compared to the Chargers’ all-pro.

Blessed with the size, speed and strength that NFL teams covet in safeties, Vaccaro is a multi-talented defender who excels at numerous facets of the game. He tracks ball-carriers like a missile and hits the opposition with brute force.  He possesses exceptional coverage skills and is extremely dangerous as a blitzer off the edge pressuring the quarterback.

Vaccaro was a leader on the Longhorns’ defense during his senior season, recording 92 tackles, seven passes defensed and a pair of interceptions.  He was named second-team All-Big 12 in the process, one year removed from being a first-team selection as a junior with 67 tackles, 6.5 for loss, seven passes defensed and two interceptions.

An aggressive young man who also plays with an edge, Vaccaro isn’t afraid to mix it up with any member of the offense. In addition to thriving as a safety, he is so versatile that he’s also been used as a nickel back at times.  He thrived in that role for Texas, matching up well with slot receivers.  The biggest flaw in his game so far is his lack of natural instincts, but that figures to improve in time.  Thus, watch for Vaccaro to be an early selection in April.
