Prospect Profile: Kelcy Quarles

Posted Apr 22, 2014

Learn more about South Carolina defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles.

In order to familiarize fans with some of the top names in the 2014 NFL Draft, Chargers.com will be highlighting a different prospect each weekday leading up to the first day of the draft on May 8th.

We continue the series with a scouting report of South Carolina’s Kelcy Quarles.

Name: Kelcy Quarles
School: South Carolina
Height: 6-4
Weight: 297 pounds
Position: Defensive Tackle

Jadeveon Clowney was the South Carolina defensive lineman who received the lion’s share of publicity the past couple years, but football aficionados know that Kelcy Quarles was mighty effective as well for the Gamecocks.

Over his three year collegiate career, the defensive tackle posted 105 tackles, 23.5 tackles for loss and 13.0 sacks.  Quarles really came into his own during a standout junior campaign when he posted career highs with 39 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks.  His 9.5 sacks paced the team and tied for third in the entire SEC.  As a result, he was named to a Second Team All- American and First Team All-SEC selection.

Quarles has the desired measurable for a defensive tackle at 6-4, 297 pounds.  He is naturally strong and heavy handed, able to beat offensive linemen with sheer force.  He fires off the ball extremely fast and constantly flocks to the ball carrier.  Quarles is also a punishing tackler who at the next level projects as a defensive tackle in a 4-3 defense or an end in the 3-4.

There are some who say Quarles could have used another year of seasoning at South Carolina, especially as it would have been his defense with the departure of Clowney.  Still, by drawing comparisons to the likes of Lamarr Houston and other effective linemen, it’s certainly understandable why Quarles chose to make the leap to the NFL at this point in time.

Combine Metrics
40-yard Dash: 5.03
Bench Press: 27 reps
Vertical Jump: 23.5 inches
Broad Jump: 102.0 inches
