Part of the scouting process when it comes to the NFL draft is piecing together bits of information and making educated decisions based on that information. For some players, there isn’t much to go on.  That’s not the case for defensive tackle Kawann Short, who has started all 50 games during his four year career at Purdue.

In particular, Short dominated his last two seasons as a Boilermaker.  As a junior, he recorded 54 tackles, 17 for a loss and 6.5 sacks, earning First Team All-Big Ten and team MVP honors in the process.  Short toyed with the idea of declaring for the draft but decided to return for a senior year in which he notched 47 tackles, 14.5 for a loss and six sacks.  He was named second-team All-America and was once again a first team All-Big Ten member.

Short is a versatile player who can play all along the defensive front and excel in both 3-4 and 4-3 defensive schemes.  Lightning quick for a big defensive lineman, he shoots the gap well and is disruptive in all situations.  Short is also hard to move once he plants his massive body in the middle, handling blocks well to open up lanes for his teammates. He uses his athleticism as well as his sheer power to beat offensive linemen in both the passing and running games.

His distractors are quick to point out a questionable motor as well as his tendency to disappear for a few plays per game.  Still, that should be easily corrected at the next level with the proper coaching.

A hamstring issue forced Short to miss both the Scouting Combine and his school’s pro day.  Nonetheless, expectations are that Short will be an early pick on day two, and may even find himself at the lower end of round one.
